BRISBANE, Aug 7 AAP - Firefighters have brought a large industrial fire under control
in Brisbane's south.
The fire broke out in a warehouse building in Shoebury Street, Rocklea, at about 8pm
(AEST) on Saturday, the Department of Community Safety said.
The building was destroyed and a neighbouring property damaged, but firefighters were
able to protect a number of other buildings in the area, the department said in a statement.
No one was injured and investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire,
police said.

Vic: Korp case a public airing of very private lives
By Mike Hedge
MELBOURNE, Jan 16 AAP - It's a scenario common in American television cop shows.
Someone goes missing, a body is discovered, police arrive, the investigation begins
and the grief-stricken wife or husband becomes a suspect.
Thanks to some outstanding detective work, a mistress or a lover is unearthed, a couple
of twists and turns lead to a mysterious secret life and within an hour the case is tidied
up.
In Melbourne this week it happened for real - with a liberal dose of spice and a cast
of characters that included victim, husband and mistress, together with the recently deceased
captain of a paddle steamer and resourceful newspaper people who seemed to know more than
the police.
One big difference between the case of missing mother Maria Korp and the TV dramas
is that she didn't die.
But otherwise the truth in the Korp case is shaping up as stranger, and more interesting,
than fiction.
Maria Korp is a 50-year-old mother of two who works in a pantyhose factory.
She first came to public attention on February 10 when police announced they held grave
fears for her safety.
Mrs Korp hadn't been seen for more than 24 hours after she left her palatial home in
Melbourne's north-west for work on Wednesday last week.
Descriptions of her and her red Mazda car appeared in newspapers and on Sunday a security
guard at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance spotted the vehicle.
In the boot of the car, police found Mrs Korp alive, but gravely ill.
After being rushed to hospital, doctors put her into a medically induced coma in a
bid to assist her recovery.
As Mrs Korp lay in a critical condition, her husband Joe began a series of media appearances,
acknowledging he was a suspect.
It was also revealed that an intervention order had previously been taken out preventing
him from coming into contact with his wife.
He also admitted to having recently had an affair with a woman who had been married
to the recently deceased river boat captain, who had died of natural causes.
Mr Korp denied any involvement in his wife's disappearance.
Within 24 hours of the discovery of Mrs Korp in the boot of her car came the revelation
that separated this story from the rest.
The Korps, despite having been kept apart by the intervention order and Mr Korp acknowledging
his love affair, had apparently advertised on a internet "swingers" website their desire
to have sex with other females or couples.
Photographs of Mrs Korp and details of the couple's physical appearance and other personal
information, including their sexual orientation, appeared on the site.
The existence of Joe and Maria Korp's internet listing was revealed by a Melbourne
newspaper, which also provided the name of Mr Korp's alleged mistress and revealed that
she was the former wife of the dead river boat captain.
By mid-week, the police had arrested both Mr Korp and a 38-year-old woman in relation
to the incident.
Mrs Korp, meanwhile, lay in the Alfred Hospital, where investigators were waiting for
her to recover sufficiently to be brought out of her coma.
She will then, presumably, fill any gaps in a story that when told in full promises
to be better than TV.

QLD:Serial offender developing empathy: doctor
By Petrina Berry
BRISBANE, April 11 AAP - Serial sex offender Robert John Fardon could be released into
the community provided he's strictly supervised and doesn't use drugs or alcohol, a doctor
has told a Brisbane court.
The psychiatrist said Fardon is developing empathy with age and is becoming less anti-social.
Fardon, 63, has spent more than 30 years in jail for sex offences against children and women.
He was last released from prison in 2007 but in 2008 he was returned to jail after
allegedly breaching a supervision order under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders)
Act.
Fardon is still in custody under a detention order despite being acquitted of raping
an intellectually impaired Gold Coast woman during his release.
He has reapplied to be released but Queensland's attorney-general is seeking a court
order to keep him in jail.
The matter is being heard in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.
Psychiatrist Scott Harden, who has performed risk assessments on Fardon, on Monday
told the court Fardon was developing more empathy for people as he aged.
In a report read to the court, he said there was "a gradual lessening of Fardon's anti-social
personality characteristics".
The report also said Fardon may have developed "an ability to reflect and some empathy
for other people with increasing age".
Dr Harden told the court Fardon would pose a "low or moderate risk" if he were to be
released under a "stringent" supervision order and if he abstained from alcohol and drugs.
He also said it was reassuring that Fardon had tested negative to all 76 random urine
and breath tests taken between July 2007 and April 2008.
The matter has been adjourned to a date to be fixed.

QLD:Qld payroll bungle costs $4m and rising
BRISBANE, Aug 13 AAP - Fixing Queensland's health payroll bungle has cost taxpayers
at least $4 million, Treasurer Andrew Fraser says.
A new system introduced in March saw hundreds of Queensland Health staff underpaid,
overpaid or not paid at all.
Queensland Health is currently rolling out a new local payroll model - known as a pay
hub - to service every hospital by September 30.
Mr Fraser told ABC radio the payroll system cost around $20 million to implement and
to date had cost another $4 million to fix the problems, including putting on extra staff.
He said the changes would "go a long, long way" towards fixing the payment problems,
which nurses say are continuing.
"I've spoken to doctors and nurses in my own electorate. I've spoken to parents at
my kid's school who have been affected," Mr Fraser said.
"They speak about it forcefully, but they don't yell and scream.
"Like with others in the system I apologise to them and can only reinforce we are doing
everything we can to solve it - it's not in anyone's interest that this goes on."

Qld: Vote due on airport tunnel builder
BRISBANE, April 14 AAP - The future of Australia's longest road tunnel will be clarified
on Tuesday when BrisConnections unit holders meet in Brisbane to vote on winding up the
company.
But an hour before the meeting is due to be held, Queensland Supreme Court judge Peter
Dutney will reveal his decision in a case brought by Macquarie Group to stop the vote
going ahead.
Justice Dutney will hand down the decision at 9am (AEST) on Tuesday, an hour before
unit holders are due to assemble at Brisbane's convention centre to vote on winding up
BrisConnections.
Macquarie is also seeking a decision on who is eligible to vote.
BrisConnections, the developer of Brisbane's $3.4 billion Airport Link tunnel, was
listed last year as a partially-paid stock, with investors paying an initial $1, with
an additional $2 owed in two future instalments.
The stock subsequently tumbled to less than one cent amid the global credit crunch
as institutions bailed out.
The meeting - sought by Melbourne entrepreneur Nicholas Bolton, BrisConnections' largest
shareholder through his company Australian Style Investments - will allow unit holders
to vote on a wind-up, relieving them of the two $1-a-unit calls on their investment.
With co-underwriters Macquarie Group and Deutsche Bank, as well as BrisConnections'
second-biggest shareholder QIC, opposing the wind-up motion, it is unlikely to gain the
75 per vote in favour to get up.
But a supplementary motion to change BrisConnections' management, which requires a
simple majority vote, is said to have a better chance of succeeding, although its impact
is less certain.
The Australian newspaper reported on Monday that Macquarie could put an alternative
proposal to the meeting that would allow retail unit holders to walk away from their due
payments but ensure major institutional shareholders paid $2 a unit, taking the toll road
company private.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has previously stated the state government would not
let the massive project go under.

NSW: Teen charged with murdering best friend suffering: family
By Kim Christian
SYDNEY, Dec 8 AAP - Relatives of a 14-year-old boy allegedly killed by his best mate
say the shooting was "a bad joke gone wrong" and murder charges must be dropped.
Josef Cruickshank's aunt Rita Ferraro said the family considered his death, from gunshot
wounds during a weekend sleepover, to be an accident.
The Sydney family hoped police would drop a murder charge against Josef's best mate,
who is also 14 and cannot be named.
"He's hurting. He didn't even mean to do it," Ms Ferraro told AAP.
"It was just an accident, a bad joke gone wrong. I don't know, I wasn't there, (but)
we know the love that these boys had for each other. They were best friends since preschool.
"He doesn't need to suffer anymore than what he is. We want the boy to know that it's
okay, we're here for him."
A family friend, who wanted to be known only as Nathan, knew both of the boys and said
they'd been playing with a gun when the charged boy "nicked the trigger".
"They were being teenagers looking at things they shouldn't have been looking at," he said.
"All I know is that they were best friends, they were playing with a gun, they didn't
know it was loaded, (he) accidentally nicked the trigger and it was in Josh's direction."
He added: "The whole family know it was an accident."
Josef's mother Rosemary Cruickshank said she had pleaded with police not to charge
Josef's mate, who made a frantic triple-0 call after the shooting.
She said she didn't want a second young life destroyed.
"I forgive him. You cannot blame a kid for an accident like this," The Daily Telegraph
quoted her as saying.
Paramedics tried desperately to save Josef after being called to a rural property on
Silverdale Road at Orangeville, in Sydney's south-west, at about 10.15pm on Saturday.
Josef, who had gunshot wounds to the face and neck, was conscious when ambulance officers
arrived but died a short time later.
His friend was charged with murder after declining to make a statement to police on
legal advice and has been bailed to face Campbelltown Children's Court on January 5.
A spokesman for the NSW Attorney-General's office said the murder charge was a matter
for police, but they could consider the family's views in deciding whether to proceed.
"They'll listen to something, but they're under no legal obligation to not go ahead," he said.
He said the teenager could face an alternative charge such as manslaughter.
"It depends if he had any kind of criminal intent, obviously all those things would
be considered," he said.
The shooting has prompted NSW Premier Nathan Rees to look at the state's gun laws,
but he say he'll only make changes if it's proven stricter measures are required.
Mr Rees said he had sought a report on the teenager's death and a string of weekend
drive-by shootings in Sydney.
"If there are things that we need to do, then we will do them, to reduce availability
or tighten up provisions relating to gun ownership and control and safe keeping of firearms,"
he told reporters on Monday.

Fed: Fretilin condemns attacks on Horta, Gusmao
CANBERRA, Feb 11 AAP - East Timor's Fretilin political party has condemned today's
rebel attacks on President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
Fretilin secretary-general Mari Alkatiri, a former prime minister of East Timor, today
pledged full cooperation with security agencies to maintain peace and stability following
the attacks.
Rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was shot dead by guards during the pre-dawn raid on Mr
Ramos-Horta's house.
"We are shocked that this has happened, if the media reports are true," Mr Alkatiri
said in a statement.
"This comes as a total surprise given the recent positive developments, as a result
of the president's tireless efforts to find a mechanism of national political consensus
to find solutions to the critical issues that are faced by our country."
Mr Ramos-Horta was wounded in the attack and is undergoing surgery at an Australian
military base after being shot in stomach, said a presidential adviser.
The wound suffered by the president appeared serious, neighbour Januario Freitas told Reuters.
"President Ramos-Horta was shot in the stomach and is undergoing surgery at the heliport,"
Agusto Junior, a presidential adviser, told reporters.
There was speculation he would be flown to Australia - probably Darwin - for further treatment.
The Associated Press, quoting local TV, also reported rebels had carried out a failed
attack on the home of Mr Gusmao.
Details of the attack on Mr Ramos-Horta's home and the number of casualties remained unclear.
Mr Alkatiri said Fretilin was concerned at the apparent ease by which gunmen were able
to access the residences of Mr Ramos-Horta and Mr Gusmao.
He demanded an explanation for the security breach from the United Nations Mission
in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) and the Australian-led International Stabilisation Force.
"We demand answers as to how these breaches in security could possibly happen if the
reports are proven to be true," Mr Alkatiri said.

Fed: Few business see better wages as way to retain staff
EDS: Embargoed to 0001 AEST Friday, Aug 24
By Colin Brinsden
CANBERRA, Aug 24 AAP - It's a classic case of having your cake and eating it.
Businesses say having the best workers gives them the edge over their competitors,
but they aren't necessarily prepared to pay for it, a survey released today has found.
Research by business consultant Grant Thornton International found that only two per
cent of the 250 companies surveyed across Australia put any value in having a remuneration
strategy in place to attract talented workers.
Just 30 per cent of business owners have pay and reward schemes in place to retain
staff, while only 19 per cent believe remuneration strategies maintain a positive attitude
among staff.
However, when asked what is the most significant factor that has made their business
better than their competitors, having the best people on staff ranked the highest at 18
per cent.
This was followed by offering a world class service at 14 per cent and the ability
to adapt and respond to market needs at 13 per cent.
"Whilst staff retention is seen by business owners as essential, it is surprising to
see that so few businesses use remuneration strategies for this purpose, despite the obvious
impact on the bottom-line," Tony Markwell, National Head of Private Business Services,
Grant Thornton, said.
"What is even more astounding is that only two per cent of business owners recognise
that a competitive remuneration package is a key driver in attracting high calibre staff."
He said in the face of the current skills shortage caused by an extremely tight labor
market, business owners should be doing more to attract and keep the best people.
"Smart remuneration strategies must be a key part of this."
Other factors that are seen putting a company ahead of the rest are the firm's product
at nine per cent, its brand name at seven per cent and customer loyalty at four per cent.

Race: Boss stands tall as top jockeys dominate carnival
By John Coomber, Senior Sports Writer
SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - Golden Slipper Day belonged to Damien Oliver. Derby Day was all
about Darren Beadman. On Doncaster Day, it was time for the Boss to assert himself.
Australia's greatest three riders have whacked up the spoils in the Sydney autumn carnival
so far, proving the old racing adage that the best jockeys win the best races.
Oliver won four at Rosehill, including the Golden Slipper and the BMW. Beadman won
four at Randwick on Saturday, including the Derby and the Sires' Produce.
There was only one Group One race at Randwick today, and Glen Boss duly steered the
heavily backed favourite Haradasun over the line in the Doncaster.
It was the 60th Group One win for Boss, who became a household name when he rode the
great mare Makybe Diva to three consecutive Melbourne Cup wins from 2003-05.
Boss only got the Doncaster ride because Haradasun's usual jockey Nash Rawiller is
unable to make the lightweight 53kg.
Boss has now ridden the colt twice and won Group One races both times, having taken
out the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill 10 days ago.
"I love this horse. He's something special," Boss said.
Haradasun, who was backed from $5 into $4.20 favourite, ran erratically in the straight
but had too much class for the rest of the field.
Beadman was second on Mentality and consoled himself by riding a double, while Oliver
finished fifth on the baldy-faced Apache Cat. He still kept up his strike rate with three
winners for the day.

Qld: Raiders in stolen sports cars target businesses
BRISBANE, Dec 7 AAP - A group of men driving stolen sports cars has broken into a string
of businesses during a two-week crime spree on the Gold Coast, police say.
Acting Detective Inspector Terry Goldsworthy today said about three men driving stolen
Nissan Skylines or Silvia cars had smashed into a variety of businesses and vandalised
them before stealing property and cash.
"The offenders either kick in the front glass doors or use a tyre lever or crowbar
to break the glass to gain entry to the businesses," Insp Goldsworthy said.
"Once inside the men damage computers and equipment before stealing property and cash."
He said businesses affected were in suburbs including Nerang, Mermaid Beach, Burleigh
Heads, Merrimac and Robina.
"There is no type of business being targeted with restaurants, dental clinics, beauty
salons and real estate agents being broken into," Insp Goldsworthy said.
A police spokeswoman could not immediately detail the exact number of businesses targeted
but said seven were hit overnight.
No estimate for the value of the stolen goods and damage has been released.
Police are now examining surveillance vision from the damaged businesses.

NSW: Police seize huge haul of chemicals used to make drugs
SYDNEY, Aug 1 AAP - Three men have been arrested following a string of raids on Sydney
homes that netted chemicals which could have been used to make $60 million worth of drugs.
Drug Squad detectives simultaneously searched four residences in Sans Souci, Fairfield
West, Colyton and Lugarno about 6.30am (AEST) today, police said.
They were investigating an alleged conspiracy to manufacture millions of dollars of
prohibited drugs.
The strike force was set up in July last year after police received information about
the alleged importation of 2,200 litres of methylamine - a key ingredient in the production
of methylamphetamine and the party drug MDMA.
Police allege the liquid they seized could produce a minimum yield of 400kg of methylamphetamine,
worth an estimated potential street value of at least $10 million.
The methylamine could also have been used to make at least 500kg of MDMA, worth an
estimated potential street value of $60 million.
A 29-year-old man from Sans Souci, a 34-year-old man from Colyton and 35-year-old man
from Fairfield West were being questioned by detectives, police said.

Fed: Odyssey House says Howard misses point on mental health
MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - Odyssey House has accused state and federal leaders of missing
the point by advocating a tougher line on marijuana as part of a mental health reform
package.
The drug counselling service's chief executive, David Crosbie, said while he welcomed
the commitment at the Council of Australian Government (COAG) meeting to mental health,
it was important to take a holistic approach to patients.
He described marijuana and amphetamine use as "a small subset" of a larger issue.
"We need our systems to respond to the needs of people rather than their labels," he said.
Mr Crosbie said in his work he was frustrated because he had funding to treat people
for alcohol or drug-related problems but the service could not even fund a mental health
nurse.
"Most of our clients with major drug problems also have major mental health problems
and are dealing with homelessness and unemployment," he said.
"When we try to work holistically we're told you can't help them because you're not
funded for that.
"It means that the system lacks innovation and it lacks responsiveness to real people
and real people's problems."
Mr Crosbie's comments followed Prime Minister John Howard's announcement that he would
ask the state premiers to support a tougher line on marijuana as part of a mental health
reform package to be discussed at the COAG.
Mr Howard said the stance was necessary amid mounting evidence that marijuana abuse
contributed to mental health problems.
He said he supported the NSW legislation to increase the penalties for growing hydroponic
marijuana, which is stronger than the naturally grown variety.
Mr Howard said many Australians had been successfully persuaded not to smoke tobacco
over the last 30 years, and "we ought to be able to do the same with marijuana".

Police suspect the man stabbed his partner to death in the bedroom before turning the

Intellectual Capital Associates' Analysis of Security
Market Points to Fast Growth in the Burgeoning NSM
Market, Further Consolidation
ICA Syndicate (http://www.icasyndicate.com) today announces the publication of its latest Business Intelligence report entitled "Network Security Management: The Binding Force of I-Security." In this heightened security-conscious environment, companies are looking for new solutions to fix gaps left by firewalls, anti-virus software, intrusion detection and Virtual Private Networks. Instead of searching for new products, more companies are finding success in Network Security Management, which links all of the above tools and monitors them to spot and fix security breaches. Several new NSM start-ups have secured venture capital, and larger security and network management firms are coming out with their own NSM products. Among the report's key points:
-- NSM sales are growing three times faster than the anti-virus or intrusion detection market, and that pace could continue as the proliferation of security products and wireless devices spurs sales. -- IT managers prefer best-of-breed security products over security suites, a fact which will continue driving sales of independent NSM makers in the near future. -- As the business matures, large security companies such as Symantec (Nasdaq:SYMC) and Network Associates (NYSE:NET) will delve further into NSM and grab market share from today's NSM leaders.
This report -- the second in a 3-report security suite -- offers key insights drawn from interviews with industry operators, technologists and financial insiders, as well as public filings, conference calls, and other sources.

Jan. 6--Four other companies made million-dollar pitches to buy Picus Inc.'s Internet Service Provider business, but Picus attorneys said Friday that Omega Communications Inc. ended the day with the best offer.
Omega, a Connecticut company, had been criticized as an insider buyer for trying to buy the Internet dial-up services even before Picus filed for bankruptcy protection Nov. 7. Omega said Friday it would pay $1.35 million in cash at the deal's closing, plus allow Picus to keep $125,000 in Internet customer payments.
The final call could be made in bankruptcy court Monday, when a buyer could be approved. Picus expects to close the deal by the end of the month.
"We're hoping for better bids on Monday," said Frank J. Santoro, a Portsmouth attorney representing Picus.
More than a month ago, Omega was the first to step forward to buy the Internet business, which since the filing has dropped from roughly 14,500 to 10,500 customers. Omega offered up $1.55 million -- a little more than $725,000 in on-the-table cash and leases, with the rest to be paid off after two years.
Under that agreement, if Omega had paid off the entire bill within 60 days of the deal's closing, it would have earned a $200,000 discount off the price. With its new offer, since Omega would be shelling out the total amount up front, it would receive the discount, automatically dropping the price from $1.55 million to $1.35 million.
Not surprisingly, Omega's invitation to pay in full made it the preferable choice for cash-strapped Picus -- not to mention its largest creditors.
"The more cash, the better," said Douglas M. Foley, a Norfolk attorney representing General Electric Capital Corporation and NTFC Capital Corporation, two large creditors whose liens against Picus' assets are still disputed. "You don't have to wait for a payment. You don't have uncertainty of collection."
Until Friday afternoon, Picus leaders were leaning toward Encino, Calif.-based Sitestar Corp., a holding company of small Internet service providers in Virginia, including one in Martinsville and Lynchburg.
Sitestar had offered the highest amount, at $1.75 million, $400,000 of which would be handed over at closing and $100,000 absorbed in a lease. The remaining $1.25 million would be paid at 8 percent interest over three years. Sitestar's proposal also included $125,000 for Picus in customer payments.
The other three bids, ranging in structure and price from $175 per customer to more than $1.6 million total, hailed from all over the country. The bidders were Planet Sweep Inc., a New York City company specializing in Internet technologies; Earthlink Inc., an Atlanta ISP; and Atlantic.Net Internet Services, a Gainesville, Fla., ISP.
The Internet sale is just a precursor to that of the significantly larger Digital Subscriber Line business, which allows customers to dial into the Internet and use the phone on a single line. A hearing will also be held later this month on whether to auction off Picus' equipment and furniture.
Before the Internet bidding began, creditors expressed concern over Omega's offer. They said because Omega's owner, Charles Cocuzza, was also Picus' vice president of ISP operations, this was an insider deal that may have shaved down the real value of the business.
But the other companies had set forth similar prices, laying those fears to rest.
"You just want to make sure he didn't have the advantage," said Jonathan L. Hauser, a Norfolk attorney representing Picus' Official Unsecured Creditors Committee. "As a result, he brought his price up. So far, the process has worked.'

INTERNET.(guidelines for building a Web site)(Internet/Web/Online Service Information)
Weaving your first Web site
Haven't jumped aboard the runaway Web train yet? Not everyone needs a site, but if you maintain a private Internet account with an ISP such as BigPond, OzEmail or Zip World, it probably permits you to post a Web site. Advertising your business isn't the only reason to publish a site -- the Web is a good way to share photos or information with family and friends, or to share your expertise in a particular area with people around the world.
Probably the easiest way to start is to launch the Web-authoring tool that comes with your browser. Netscape's Communicator includes Composer; choose Start-Programs-Netscape Communicator-Netscape Composer to run it. Starting with version 4.0, Internet Explorer includes Front. Page Express. To launch it, choose Start-Programs-Internet Explorer-Front Page Express (Start-Programs-Accessories-Internet Tools-FrontPage Express with IE 5).
If Front Page Express isn't installed on your PC and you use Internet Explorer 4 as your Web browser, choose Start-Settings-Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, pick the Windows Setup tab, double-click the Internet Tools entry in the Components list, check Microsoft FrontPage Express in the resulting Components list, and click OK twice to start the installation. If your browser is IE 5, you can download FrontPage Express 2 from Microsoft's Windows Update site (windowsupdate.microsoft.com).
You can use these tools to get an uncomplicated site up and running quickly, but it pays to know the basics of HTML (short for HyperText Markup Language). The authoring tools don't always do a perfect job of generating HTML, and they don't let you create every kind of HTML command, or tag. PageResource.com offers dozens of Web design tutorials, including beginning HTML guides, at www.pageresource.com/html/ hclist.htm. Or go straight to the source: HTML 4.0 lead architect Dave Raggett's "Getting Started With HTML" at www.w3.org/MarkUp/ Guide.
Less is more
Web sites can contain lots of things -- animated graphics, image maps, scripting, background images, background music, and colour, colour, colour. But they don't have to. Your site's most important element is text; it should be as concise as possible and sensibly organised via HTMEs headings, paragraphs, and lists. Put anything that interferes with your message on the to-be-jettisoned list.
Background colours and bitmaps can make your page pretty, and they often improve on the default grey background that browsers display when a page does not specify a background colour. White or light-coloured text on a black or very dark background can be fairly readable as well, but, for a really radical scheme, consider black text on a white background. It works for books, magazines and newspapers, and it works on the Web too. Don't take my word for it -- check out pcworld.idg.com.au for proof.
Text is your site's main ingredient, but images are the spice that gives the content flavour -- the trick is not to add too much. Even a tiny graphic slows a page's load time, and the longer you make visitors wait, the greater the chance they'll hit the Back button and go elsewhere. As a rule of thumb, keep your pages under 50KB -- some top sites, such as Yahoo's, are even smaller. For help slimming your JPEG images, visit the Online JPEG Wizard at www.jpegwizard.com.
Time for a redesign?
Perhaps your site needs a refresh too. It's not a trivial decision: if your visitors are used to finding information in a certain way or place, reshaping the geography could put them off. The job might take longer than you expect, especially if your site has grown over the years. On the other hand, if the new design snakes the site easier to use, the pain may be worth enduring.
If you can't imagine changing your site's look or you need structural ideas, scout the Web. Look for sites that present information in a way that would make sense for you -- and steal the design. If you can't figure out how a particular site works, choose View-Source in Internet Explorer, or View-Page Source in Navigator to see the HTML code that makes it tick.
The Web is also a great place to learn how not to design your site. If you're considering adding Web doodads, take a few minutes to revisit some of the garish, blinking, flashing sites that drive you crazy. More important, observe how frequently designers -- both professional and amateur -- let their enthusiasm get in the way of easy navigation. For the bottom line on what not to do, see Jakob Nielsen's "Top Ten Mistakes in Web Design" at www.useit.com/ alertbox/9605.html.

Entrust Technologies and Secom Use Digital Signatures to Finalize Agreement During Japanese Visit.
PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1999--
TOKYO--International Contract Signing Ceremony Witnessed
by Canadian Prime Minister and Local Dignitaries
Entrust(r) Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: ENTU), a global leader in solutions that bring trust to e-business, showcased its industry-leading digital signature technology today in Tokyo by digitally signing an agreement with Secom Co. Ltd., Japan's largest security company. The agreement establishes Secom as the Japanese distributor for Entrust Technologies' recently- introduced business unit, Entrust.net(, which provides a trusted security service for issuing digital certificates to e-business Web servers.
This signing ceremony represents the first time in the history of e-business that a formal contract has been signed publicly between two private-sector parties using digital signatures. Digital signatures authenticate the signing parties and witnesses to an electronic document or contract, and protect these documents from unauthorized access or alterations. Approvers, document reviewers, and authors can electronically "sign" and process electronic documents easily and securely by attaching their digital signatures for quick, cost-effective routing and processing across private and public networks like the Internet.
Entrust Technologies' executive vice-president and chief technology officer, Brian O'Higgins, and Secom Ltd.'s CIO, Yoichi Tao, digitally signed the contract, while the premier of Ontario, Michael Harris, and the Canadian federal minister for International Trade, Pierre S. Pettigrew, served as formal witnesses to the agreement. The contract was signed in the presence of Canada's Prime Minister, Jean Chretien, several of Canada's Provincial Premiers and territorial leaders and local dignitaries.
"We are extremely pleased to facilitate today's event, which provides a real-world example of the practical use of digital signature technology as the foundation of an important activity that happens every day in business - the signing of contracts," said Brian O'Higgins, executive vice-president and chief technology officer, Entrust Technologies Inc. "This contract with Secom is a key progression in our global Entrust.net strategy. We look forward to working with Secom.net to provide security to Japanese organizations conducting e-business transactions and communications over the Internet."
In its new role as Japanese distribution partner, Secom.net will be responsible for receiving requests from Japanese customers and providing the necessary validity and background checking before requesting a certificate from Entrust.net.
"Today's digital contract signing marked an important contract for Secom in Japan," said Yoichi Tao, CIO, Secom Co. Ltd. "As the first and largest security company in Japan, we have built a reputation for excellence. We look forward to serving as the local distribution point for Japanese businesses as they order Entrust.net certificates to manage secure transactions and communications with their customers, partners and employees."
How the Technical Process Worked For Digitally
Signing the Contract
- The signing parties from both companies and the witnesses to the
agreement used an electronic authentication system created by
Entrust Technologies that combines Entrust's digital signature
technology with Entrust-Ready( partner products from Adobe and
ActivCard.
- An Adobe Acrobat pdf file version of the contract was created and
all officials were issued unique ActivCard smartcards in advance.
The smartcards store each official's unique personal credentials.
- To sign the contract, each official inserted their smartcard into
a smartcard reader and entered a unique code that enabled their
digital signature to be attached to the contract.

IRELAND were left to rue errors that cost them a first win Down Under for 29 years. In patches the tourists were the better side, in Melbourne, but were not able to make their immense second-half pressure count, as the Wallabies clung on for a win in new coach Robbie Deans' first match. And Ireland lock Paul O'Connell insisted the only reason his side lost was because of a few errors.
"We made too many mistakes, myself included. If we cut out the mistakes, we would have won the game and that is very disappointing," said O'Connell. "If we want to get to the next level, we need to cut that out. "We conceded two soft tries. I don't Matt Giteau should have been allowed to offload for the second try, nor Lote Tuqiri for the first."
Ireland, throwing the ball around at every opportunity, dominated possession and territory in the first half but only crossed the try-line once. Wycliffe Palu and Tuqiri combined for Australia's opening try, scored by Berrick Barnes. But the Irish stormed back with flanker Denis Leamy scoring off a rolling maul close to the Wallabies' try-line. Ronan O'Gara's conversion gave Ireland the lead, but it did not last long with lock James Horwill scoring on his Test debut.
Giteau added the extras for a 12-7 advantage and put his team further ahead with a 27th-minute penalty goal. Another Giteau penalty extended the lead. But the Irish refused to throw in the towel creating several chances, before skipper Brian O'Driscoll went over for the score to edge the Irish to within six points, but Australia hung on.

Virgin America Launches LEAP Engine with $1.4 Billion Order.
Virgin America today launched CFM International's advanced LEAP™ engine with an order to power 30 new Airbus A320neo aircraft. The airline also announced that CFM's CFM56-5B will power 30 current technology A320s. The 60 airplanes were announced in January of this year and the engine orders have a combined value of approximately $1.4 billion U.S. at list price.
Both the LEAP and CFM56-5B engines are products of CFM International (CFM), a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (Safran group) and GE. The new airplanes will begin delivery in 2016. LEAP engines incorporate revolutionary technologies never before seen in the single-aisle aircraft segment. The new engine combines advanced aerodynamic design techniques, lighter, more durable materials, and leading-edge environmental technologies, making it a major breakthrough in engine technology. The 15 percent better engine fuel efficiency*, at current fuel prices, translates to as much as $1.6 million in fuel cost savings alone for customers per airplane, per year. LEAP technology will also achieve double-digit improvements in CO2 emissions and noise levels, all while providing the industry's best reliability and lowest maintenance costs.
"As a young and growing airline, we credit much of our success to having the right equipment, and choosing LEAP to power our A320neos is right in line with our long-term strategy," said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush. "With LEAP, Virgin America is getting the best of all possible worlds: the industry's most advanced technology-with all of the benefits that represents -as well as the consistency and inherent reliability of a CFM product. We also know that the company's reputation for meeting its commitments is unrivaled and this latest move will help us continue to fuel growth and success in the North American market."
"We are thrilled that Virgin America is launching LEAP and look forwarding to expanding an already great relationship," said Jean-Paul Ebanga, president and CEO of CFM. "But this is just the beginning; this engine has a great future."
"The advantages of LEAP technology will speak for themselves," said Kevin McAllister, vice president of Sales for CFM. "We believe our customers will have a clear preference for all we have to offer. CFM and its parent companies, Snecma and GE, have invested heavily in the LEAP program and spent more than 15 years developing and maturing the most advanced technology in the industry today. This engine will provide unprecedented levels of efficiency and environmental responsibility while maintaining the legacy of aviation's most reliable product line."
The lower fuel burn also reduces CO2 emission by 15 percent, while LEAP's industry-leading combustor technology will reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), a greenhouse gas, by 50 percent compared to current requirements.
Further contributing to Virgin America's role as an environmentally responsible leader, the engine cuts noise by as much as 15 decibels, which will keep objectionable noise within the confines of the airport. In simple terms, this reduction is comparable to making a jack hammer operate as quietly as an alarm clock.
Virgin America's current A320 family fleet is powered by the CFM56. The CFM56 provides the highest reliability, durability, and lowest maintenance costs in its class. The airline's current fleet is up to 25 percent more fuel and carbon efficient than the average fleet flying domestically. The A320neo, along with the CFM LEAP engine will yield even greater efficiencies.
CFM began testing eCore Demonstrator 2 in late May at GE facilities in Ohio, one month ahead of schedule. eCore Demo 2 features a 10-stage high-pressure compressor and two-stage high-pressure turbine, along with the lean burn, low emissions TAPS combustor.
At the same time, CFM is close to completing a demanding 5,000-cycle endurance test program for the advanced 3-D Woven Resin Transfer Molding (3-DW RTM) fan, along with the composite fan case being developed by Snecma.
With a base of more than 500 customers, and more than 22,200 engines delivered, CFM has consistently delivered on its commitments, completing 21 engine/aircraft certifications on time and on specification. Since the first A320 was launched in 1985, CFM56 engines have been selected to power nearly 60 percent of all A320 family aircraft. About Virgin America: Headquartered in California and launched in August 2007, Virgin America offers guests attractive fares and a host of innovative features aimed at reinventing air travel. The airline's new aircraft offer interactive in-flight entertainment systems and power outlets near every seat for electronic gear. Virgin America offers Gogo™ in-flight internet service on every flight and hosts the largest in-flight entertainment library in the North American skies via the touch-screen Red™ platform.
In just three over years flying, the carrier was named "Best Domestic Airline" in the Conde Nast Traveler 2008, 2009 and 2010 Readers' Choice Awards and "Best Domestic Airline" in Travel + Leisure's 2008, 2009 and 2010 World's Best Awards. The airline's current base of operations is San Francisco International Airport's newly opened Terminal Two. Virgin America flies to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Chicago (as of May 25, 2011), as well as Los Cabos and Cancun, Mexico.

1,000 Small Businesses Sought for Banding Together to Get Increased Website Traffic, TypoBounty.com.
Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 14, 2011
Small businesses notoriously have small marketing budgets. Advertising online is getting more expensive but getting increased website traffic remains key to success. TypoBounty.com has launched a new low cost way to advertise and market online called ReadThrough Marketing[TM]. RTM increases website traffic tremendously. 90% clickthrough rates are common.
Watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waNaKp2C7Lk
Because TypoBounty.com is a community of shoppers and internet users are willing to read every word of a website, visitors originating from TypoBounty.com present a greater opportunity for website owners to communicate with potential purchasers of their products and subscribers to their web content. It's a golden opportunity to get increased website traffic to the tune of millions of new visitors. No matter what a website is about.
ReadThrough Marketing's strategy is to have businesses offer small bounties on any website content typos that may exist on their websites. It's estimated that 1,000 businesses will make the game attractive enough to draw in millions of visitors willing to try their hand at finding the mistakes or intentionally hidden treasures on websites. In the process, they come and read every one the website owner wants to communicate.
Invented by a small business owner frustrated with the difficulty of increasing website traffic in today's competitive environment, ReadThrough Marketing[TM] redefines the thoughts of what is possible for small businesses and what is the next big thing of drawing in loads of traffic for small businesses.
The opportunity to play the game of finding typos for a chance to win prizes draws internet users while providing benefits to small businesses - 70% to 90% clickthrough rates, eliminates ad blindness, 100X visit times, stops content skimming, causes visitors to read every word of sales pitches, lowers consumers buy defenses, helps business copy to be error free, provides public relations benefits, company social media tie in, encourages impulse buys, at lower ad prices and more. This draws people like crazy and creates a huge impulse buy opportunities.
Users dig to the bottom of TypoBounty.com to play the game. So, small businesses can't get priced out of position.
"There are only 1,000 spots available for websites/small businesses desiring to get in and lock-in a price that is 1/5th the normal rate for life. We intend to market this on the Internet, TV, Cable, Radio, Newspapers and Billboards on a grand scale. We are committed to getting the word out. We think this is going to seriously put some websites on the map," says Andre Roberson, President of TypoBounty.com. "When operating collectively, small businesses are very powerful."
To small businesses, minority owned businesses, woman owned businesses, and home based businesses, this is the opportunity of a life time. Website owners desiring increased website traffic should secure one or more of the discounted ad spots before they are all gone.

Maryland poll: Traditional media and internet more trusted than social media for research news.
Most Maryland residents trust the health and medical research information provided by traditional media-newspapers (77%), television (71%), magazines (68%), radio (66%)-and the Internet (also 66%), according to a new state poll commissioned by Research!America. Social media fared less well, with 51% saying social media is not trustworthy for health and medical research issues. Fewer than 20% use their cell phone or other mobile device to find health information.
The Maryland poll findings were released at a forum on science journalism at the National Press Club convened by Research!America, Pfizer Inc and the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, School of Public Health and School of Public Policy.
"The modern media landscape has become very complex, which creates many more opportunities to communicate with many more people of all ages and backgrounds," said Kevin Klose, dean, Philip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland. "At the same time, this presents a challenge in communicating about complex issues such as medical and health research findings."
One such challenge is public trust in news sources and spokespeople. Marylanders largely trust journalists as spokespeople for science news (59% see them as trustworthy), but even more so the state's residents trust science news coming from scientists (88%), health care professionals (86%) and nonprofit and voluntary health organizations (75%).
A majority (62%) trust the scientific community as much today as they did five years ago. Slightly fewer (54%) trust the media as much now as five years ago. Just 27% trust elected officials as much now as five years ago; 63% say less.
While 40% say they hear or read more about research in the news than five years ago, two-thirds say they would like to see more news coverage of science and research.
Strong public appetite for more science news presents an opportunity and a challenge for scientists as well as journalists.
"Science changes our lives, and yet that is rarely seen as news. How do we make exciting and groundbreaking science more newsworthy?" said Jack Watters, MD, VP for External Medical Affairs at Pfizer Inc and a Research!America board member. "Of course, some of the best science is done when no one is looking, but I'd like to encourage us, as a nation, to look more closely and talk about science."
Further findings from the Maryland poll include:
o 34% cited obesity as the single most important health issue facing Americans today, followed by the cost of health care (17%);
o 94% think education and training in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is important to U.S. competitiveness and future economic prosperity;
o 93% think it is important that elected officials at all levels listen to advice from scientists and public health professionals to address potential health threats;
o 87% say it is important for Maryland to be a leader in science and medical research; and
o 89% say it is important for Maryland to be a leader in public health, prevention and wellness research.
"Marylanders are right on target in identifying the key public health issues facing our state today, and they are well aware of the need for leadership in public health and prevention research," said Robert S. Gold, PhD, DrPH, dean, University of Maryland School of Public Health. "They also see as part of the solution that policy makers must be informed in order to address potential health threats and that we must provide training for Maryland residents and students in these critical areas."
The poll also indicates that Maryland residents see great economic value for their state from research: 83% say spending money on scientific research is important to Maryland's economy, in terms of jobs and incomes; and 90% think it is important for Maryland to create more opportunities for careers in science and research for its young people.
"In these findings, we see the very high priority Maryland residents place on medical and health research and news coverage of research-and the very high esteem in which they hold scientists as sources for research news," said Mary Woolley, president and CEO of Research!America. "As public trust in research news coverage increases, public support for life-saving research will increase. Our health, our well-being, our economy and our global competitiveness depend on strong support for research by the public, the news media and elected officials alike."
About the poll: Research!America commissioned Charlton Research Company to conduct an online and phone survey of 804 adults in Maryland in April 2011. The sample is proportionate to the state's demographics, including gender, age and ethnicity, with a theoretical error of [+ or -]3.5%. Demographics and media habits include the following:
o 32% of respondents were age 18-34; 38%, age 35-54; 30%, age 55 or older; and
o News sources they use most frequently include television (69% cited), followed by the Internet/websites (61%), newspapers (40%), radio (27%), magazines (18%) and social media such as Facebook and Twitter (10%).

Customers stay loyal to technology despite high-profile data breaches.
Summary: Week after week, thieves break into corporate computer systems to steal customer lists, email addresses and credit card numbers.
SAN FRANCISCO: Week after week, thieves break into corporate computer systems to steal customer lists, email addresses and credit card numbers. Large data breaches get overshadowed by even larger ones.
Yet people are turning over personal information to online retailers, social networks and other services in growing numbers. The point at which people lose trust in the websites they deal with appears further away than ever before, if it exists at all, as shopping, socializing and gaming online becomes deeply embedded in modern life.
People have come to accept that sharing information is the price of a meaningful, connected life online -- even if they don't like it.
"We are clearly schizophrenic about this technology," said Jim Dempsey, an expert on Internet privacy at the Center for Democracy & Technology. "We love it, we use it, we expect it to work, and we've woven it into our daily lives, professionally, socially and personally. But we really don't trust it, and we do get upset when our data is lost or stolen."
Companies collecting the personal details have little incentive to offer the best privacy protections. So far, people haven't demanded that companies do better by walking away from their gadgets, online retailers or social networks.
Jim Pachetti, 47, an Apple customer, said he's resigned to the fact that breaches happen. "I've accepted the fact that all my information is out there," he said.
James McCartney, an identity theft expert, said his smartphone has become an integral part of his life and business, despite the security concerns.
"The velocity of business precludes me from going without it," he said. "It's the rules of the game. It's not something I can change."
It may take government regulation to force companies to do better.
"For many companies, it's easier and cheaper to deal with the repercussions of a data breach that's already occurred, rather than taking steps to prevent it," said Ioana Rusu, regulatory counsel for Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports. "Companies need to be held accountable so they protect your data up front."
Information that distinguishes one faceless Internet surfer from another is so valuable that companies have been hurt when they limit what they collect.
Yahoo Inc., for example, will soon keep logs on people's searches for 18 months, the same amount of time as Google Inc. That's a reversal of its vow in late 2008 to strip out personally identifiable details after 90 days. In making an industry-leading privacy pledge, Yahoo said it became less competitive in offering personalized services enabled by long-term tracking.
Companies also face lawsuits and penalties by promising more than they can deliver. If companies are vague, their biggest risk is bad publicity when a hacking attack or a technical error exposes customers' information.
"The lack of meaningful liability for breaches reduces the incentive for making sure that they don't happen," said Susan Grant, director of consumer protection for the Consumer Federation of America.
Businesses know customers have nowhere else to go as long as everyone sets the bar low.
"Choice becomes meaningless in this context," said Ashkan Soltani, a security researcher.
The number of records exposed in data breaches is staggering -- more than half a billion in the past six years, says the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.
At the same time, people are sharing more online. More than half a billion people are on Facebook, and billions of people search Google and Yahoo each month and accept tracking data files known as cookies. The Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 61 percent of adult Internet users in the U.S. have used social networks, up from less than a third in 2008.
The dependence on technology explains why the reputations of technology companies are remarkably resilient, even after embarrassing security breaches.
Hackers last year uncovered a security hole on AT&T Inc.'s website and exposed the email addresses of more than 100,000 iPad owners who had signed up for AT&T's wireless Internet service. At that point, Apple had sold more than 2 million iPads. Despite the breach, the company sold some 17 million more iPads since then.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs emerged Thursday from medical leave to try to quash a controversy over secret recordings of location information by iPhones. Apple denied directly tracking people, but said it is building a database of known Wi-Fi hot spots and cell towers to improve location-based services. Google Inc.'s Android phones do something similar.
To quiet privacy critics, Apple is changing the iPhone's software to keep data for a week instead of indefinitely.
Apple's disclosure came a day after Sony Corp. said a hacker may have stolen credit card numbers and other valuable data on the 77 million players using its PlayStation online gaming network. That would make it one of the biggest known credit card breaches.
Consumers are at a disadvantage because companies often leave their privacy policies intentionally vague, yet lengthy with legalese.
In any case, few people bother to read them at all.
Carnegie Mellon University researchers found it would take the average person 40 minutes per day to read through all the privacy policies that person encounters online.
"Sadly, the consumer can do absolutely nothing to protect themselves," said Bruce Schneier, a prominent security blogger and chief security technology officer at the British telecommunications operator BT. "When you give your data to someone else, you are forced to trust them."

SECRETARY CHU ANNOUNCES $130 MILLION FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS ARPA-E'S 4TH ROUND OF FUNDING FOCUSES ON RARE EARTH ALTERNATIVES AND BREAKTHROUGHS IN BIOFUELS, THERMAL STORAGE, GRID CONTROLS, AND SOLAR POWER ELECTRONICS.
WASHINGTON, DC -- The following information was released by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE):
U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today that up to $130 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) will be made available to develop five new program areas that could spark critical breakthrough technologies and secure America's energy future. Today's funding opportunity announcement comes two months after ARPA-E announced six of its projects have secured more than $100 million in outside private capital investment - indications that the business community is eager to invest in truly innovative solutions to the country's energy challenges.
"ARPA-E is unleashing American innovation to strengthen America's global competitiveness and win the clean energy race," said Secretary Chu. "In addition to creating new jobs, breakthroughs in clean energy technologies can reduce our country's dependence of foreign oil, decrease the cost of clean electricity, and build a sustainable infrastructure for future generations of Americans."
Today's announcement is ARPA-E's fourth round of funding opportunities. In its first year, ARPA-E awarded $363 million in Recovery Act funding to 121 groundbreaking energy projects based in 30 states, with approximately 39% of projects led by universities, 33% by small businesses, 20% by large businesses, 5% by national labs, and 3% by non-profits.
ARPA-E's fourth round of funding opportunities includes five technology areas detailed below:
1. Plants Engineered To Replace Oil (PETRO). Technologies for low-cost production of advanced biofuels are limited by the small amount of available energy captured by photosynthesis and the inefficient processes used to convert plant matter to fuel. PETRO aims to create plants that capture more energy from sunlight and convert that energy directly into fuels. ARPA-E seeks to fund technologies that optimize the biochemical processes of energy capture and conversion to develop robust, farm-ready crops that deliver more energy per acre with less processing prior to the pump. If successful, PETRO will create biofuels for half their current cost, finally making them cost-competitive with fuels from oil. Up to $30 million will be made available for this program area.
2. High Energy Advanced Thermal Storage (HEATS). More than 90% of energy technologies involve the transport and conversion of thermal energy. Therefore, advancements in thermal energy storage - both hot and cold - would dramatically improve performance for a variety of critical energy applications. ARPA-E seeks to develop revolutionary cost-effective thermal energy storage technologies in three focus areas: 1) high temperature storage systems to deliver solar electricity more efficiently around the clock and allow nuclear and fossil baseload resources the flexibility to meet peak demand, 2) fuel produced from the sun's heat, and 3) HVAC systems that use thermal storage to improve the driving range of electric vehicles by up to 40 percent. Up to $30 million will be made available for this program area.
3. Rare Earth Alternatives in Critical Technologies (REACT). Rare earths are naturally-occurring minerals with unique magnetic properties that are used in many emerging energy technologies. As demand for these technologies continues to increase, rare earths are rapidly becoming more expensive due to limited global supply - prices of many have increased 300-700% in the past year. Rising rare earth prices have already escalated costs for some energy technologies and may jeopardize the widespread adoption of many critical energy solutions by U.S. manufacturers. ARPA-E seeks to fund early-stage technology alternatives that reduce or eliminate the dependence on rare earth materials by developing substitutes in two key areas: electric vehicle motors and wind generators. Up to $30 million will be made available for this program area.
4. Green Electricity Network Integration (GENI). Recent advances in computation, networking, and grid monitoring have shed light on potential ways to deliver electricity more efficiently and reliably. Today, however, the equivalent of one out of every five electricity dollars is lost to power outages and 30 percent of the grid's hardware needs replacing. ARPA-E seeks to fund innovative control software and high-voltage hardware to reliably control the grid, specifically: 1) controls able to manage 10 times more sporadically available wind and solar electricity than currently on the grid, and 2) resilient power flow control hardware - or the energy equivalent of an internet router - to enable significantly more electricity through the existing network of transmission lines. Up to $30 million will be made available for this program area.
5. Solar Agile Delivery of Electrical Power Technology (Solar ADEPT). The DOE SunShot Initiative leverages the unique strengths across DOE to reduce the total cost of utility-scale solar systems by 75 percent by the end of the decade. If successful, this collaboration would deliver solar electricity at roughly 6 cents a kilowatt hour - a cost competitive with electricity from fossil fuels. This would enable solar electricity to scale without subsidies and make the U.S. globally competitive in solar technology. ARPA-E's portion of the collaboration is the Solar ADEPT program, which focuses on integrating advanced power electronics into solar panels and solar farms to extract and deliver energy more efficiently. Specifically, ARPA-E aims to invest in key advances in magnetics, semiconductor switches, and charge storage, which could reduce power conversion costs by up to 50 percent for utilities and 80 percent for homeowners. Up to $10 million will be made available for this program area.
The five technology areas announced today will join ARPA-E's seven existing programs in power electronics (ADEPT), battery technologies (BEEST), building cooling (BEETIT), non-photosynthetic biofuels (Electrofuels), grid energy storage (GRIDS), carbon capture (IMPACCT), and its initial open solicitation.
