Amoco Chemical to build China plant HONG KONG - Amoco Chemical Asia Pacific Ltd. said Wednesday that ithad received final approval from the Chinese government to establisha joint venture to build a petrochemical facility in Zhuhai,Guangdong province. China's Ministry of Foreign Trade and EconomicCooperation said it will allow Amoco Chemical, Fu Hua Group HoldingCo. and China Chemical Fiber Co. to set up a joint venture firm knownas Amoco Zhuhai Chemical Co. Amoco Chemical, a unit of theChicago-based oil company, said it will hold an 80 percent ownershipstake. It estimates its total investment in the venture to bebetween $300 million and $400 million. The plant should be operatingin 2000. Pharmacia & Upjohn names new chiefSTOCKHOLM, Sweden - Pharmaceuticals conglomerate Pharmacia & UpjohnInc. said Wednesday that Soeren Gyll, former chief executive of theautomaker Volvo, has been named its third chairman this year. Hereplaces Jan Ekberg, who is said to have asked to be replaced aschairman but will remain as a member of the board. Ekberg, 61, ledPharmacia of Sweden as it moved toward the 1995 merger withKalamazoo, Mich.-based Upjohn. Gyll, 56, has been a Pharmacia boardmember since 1995.
